The TAFT M1 Abrams Maintenance Instructor is responsible for delivering comprehensive technical instruction on the diagnostics, repair, and sustainment of M1 Abrams tank systems. This includes the full spectrum of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic maintenance tasks required to ensure operational readiness and long‑term serviceability of armored fleet assets used by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense.
The instructor teaches students how to perform systematic troubleshooting across all major subsystems, including suspension and steering components, hydraulic and lubrication systems, turret and fire‑control assemblies, auxiliary power units, fire suppression, and gas particulate filtration systems. Instruction integrates classroom teaching, hands‑on troubleshooting labs, component rebuild sessions, and realistic field maintenance exercises.
This role reinforces proper use of technical manuals, diagnostic equipment, safety protocols, and quality assurance standards. The instructor ensures students develop the competence and confidence needed to diagnose faults, perform preventative maintenance, and conduct corrective repairs to U.S. Army standards.
• Teach detailed diagnostic procedures for identifying mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults across Abrams tank subsystems, using systematic troubleshooting methodologies and TM‑based repair protocols.
• Deliver instruction on maintenance and repair of turret components, fire‑control systems, stabilization systems, power distribution networks, and other mission‑critical assemblies.
• Train students in the proper use of advanced diagnostic tools, multimeters, electronic testers, pressure gauges, and other maintenance equipment essential to M1A2 sustainment.
• Lead hands‑on labs that include removing, inspecting, rebuilding, and reinstalling key systems such as hydraulic pumps, turret drives, electronic modules, and auxiliary power units.
• Teach proper maintenance documentation, safety compliance procedures, and quality assurance checks to ensure all work meets required maintenance standards.
• Conduct realistic field exercises that simulate operational maintenance conditions, requiring students to diagnose and repair faults under time constraints and environmental stressors.
• Reinforce preventive maintenance inspections (PMCS), lubrication schedules, fault recording, and parts requisition processes essential for long‑term readiness.
• Evaluate student performance using written exams, practical assessments, and troubleshooting lanes; provide corrective instruction and counseling to ensure skill mastery.
• Integrate instruction on Iraqi MoD‑operated platforms such as the 120mm mortar, M198 howitzer, and M109A5 to ensure maintainers understand related systems and cross‑platform sustainment concepts.
• Five (5) years of maintenance experience as MOS 91A or USMC MOS 2146.
• Knowledgeable at the NCO‑level on Iraqi MoD systems including the 120mm mortar, M198, and M109A5.
